Early in WW II, shipbuilding magnate, Henry J. Kaiser convinced President Roosevelt of the merits of a fleet of light carriers based upon his merchant ship hulls utilizing his successful mass production shipbuilding methods. These became the Casablanca class of which 50 were constructed. One such ship was the Gambier Bay (CVE-73) named after a bay on Alaska's Admiralty Island. Her keel was laid July 10, 1943 at the Kaiser shipyard in Vancouver, Washington, and she was delivered to th Navy 171 days later. Her first missions were the transportation of troops from the US Mainland to Hawaii, and then the provision of 84 aircraft to the Enterprise operating in the Marshall Islands. Following this, she was utilized in carrier qualifications of Marine pilots flying F4U Corsairs: this was the first escort carrier operation of the Corsair. Also know as the jeep carrier, the small CVE's were known to have a big punch. Gambier Bay took part in the naval surface action off Sumar at Leyte Gulf in October 1944. She was lost to Japanese naval gunfire. Approximately 700 of her crew were rescued, and she received four battle stars and shared a Presidential Unit Citation.
