Prints of the time and documents found in the historical archives of the naval museum of Barcelona allowed the reconstruction of the plans for this three-masted carrack which would be placed between the medieval merchant ship and the galleon. Quite possibly around 1519 it took part in an important expedition, which led Fernando Cortez to conquer Mexico.
The outer galleries, one of which is a balcony, the apartments under the small quarterdeck, the superstructures of the decks providing the installation of awnings for protection against the sun, clearly indicate that they were employed for the transport of passengers of high class.
Other characteristics of this ship are the escutcheons at the prow, painted with bright colors and which have only a decorative function.

Tradition speaks of Columbus's ships as 3 caravels. In reality, they consisted of two caravels and a "Nao", Santa Maria, a boat with 3 masts, 2 square sails and a lateen sail. The Santa Maria also had a foredeck, which rather puts it in the class of the carracks. Despite it's small size, the strong construction along with the perception of a great sailor led to the historical events of 1492.
