Brigantines like the Aurora were the back-bone of North American trade during the 19th century. Usually less than 100 feet long and manned by six to eight sailors, they were built quickly and at relatively low cost. They were rigged with square sails on the fore mast and triangular sails on the aft mast for a practical combination of speed and maneuverability. Hundreds of brigantines were built in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and New England from the 1830s to the 1920s. These ships transported lumber and salted cod to the Caribbean in exchange for sugar and rum.

Unconventional in appearance, these boats fish the Mediterranean off the Catalan coast of Spain. Used mostly at night, they are called light boats (bot de llum) because of the cluster of gas lanterns mounted to the stern. The light shining down into the water attracts mackerel and sardine, luring them into the nets. The traditional helm has been replaced by a set of ropes that work the rudder. Two large hull stabilizers steady the boats. Around 16 feet long, they are crewed by two men.

Built from the mid 1600s to the mid 1800’s, Xebecs were used as merchantmen and warships. Displacing 250 tons, they usually carried 24 guns and up to 350 sailors. They were the fastest and most agile vessels of the Mediterranean, easily outrunning larger, slower ships. If the wind died, Xebecs relied on a set of 10-20 oars to get out of any situation. But because of their low freeboard and shallow draught, they did not fare well in heavy seas. Many European states, including France, Spain and Britain integrated Xebecs into their navies.

OcCre’s plank-on-bulkhead Cazador kit uses laser cut wooden parts and double planking in flexible lime-wood and rich African walnut. The lifeboat is built strake by strake, just like the real thing. The American slaver Dos Amigos was built around 1830. Like other Baltimore clippers, she was small and fast with a long, narrow hull. She measured 83 feet on deck and carried a single 32-pounder carronade. Captured off the coast of Africa by the British brig Black Joke (a former slaver herself) and taken into the Royal Navy, she was renamed Fair Rosamond used in the suppression of the slave trade. She continued to serve the Royal Navy until she was sold off in 1845.

In 1588, King Philip II of Spain put the Duke of Sidonia in charge of the Spanish Armada. With the goal of invading England, 131 ships and 17,000 men set out for Dunkirk, where they were to join forces with the Duke of Parma and pick up another 16,000 men. One of the most important ships of the fleet was the San Marcos, a Portugese galleon of 790 tons. She carried 33 guns, 292 soldiers and 117 sailors. Heavily damaged during the battle and punished by high winds, San Marcos broke up on the reef between Mutton Island and Lurga just off Ireland’s west coast.

The felucca is a small wooden boat with a sharply raked mast and a large triangular sail hanging from a long, two-piece yard. They are light and maneuverable, carrying 10 passengers and a crew of two or three. They still sail the Red Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Nile in Egypt. In America, a fleet of feluccas, built by southern Italian immigrants, thronged San Francisco’s docks before the construction of Fisherman’s Wharf in 1884.

Badly damaged in the battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1799, she was rebuilt with the addition of a fourth deck and the number of cannon increased to 136, making her the largest ship of her time. In 1805, she sailed into the Battle of Trafalgar with a crew of 1,048 men and her immense 4-decked sides showing the barrels of her formidable guns. The British disabled and captured her during the battle. She sank in a storm the following day, ending her 35-year service to the Spanish Navy.

The Spanish ship Santísima Trinidad (officially named Santisima Trinidad y Nuestra Señora del Buen Fin) was a first-rate ship of the line of 120 guns (when first built). Her armament was later increased to as many as 144 guns on four decks. For many years she was the biggest warship in the world.

Design & construction
She was built at Havana, Cuba, to a design by Irish naval architect Matthew Mullan and launched in 1769 as an 120-gun three-decker (some sources say 116 or 112 guns). For many years she was the biggest warship in the world, being considerably larger than her British contemporary Victory and somewhat bigger than the French Bretagne.

In 1795, her forecastle was joined to her quarterdeck to create a fourth deck containing a battery of eight pounder guns, giving her a total of 144 guns. Her armament seems to have been quickly reduced to 130 to 136 guns. Even so, she now carried the largest number of guns of any single ship of her time. As the only ship with four gun decks, she was reputed to be the largest warship in the world, although she had actually been surpassed in sheer size by the new French 120-gun ships such as the Océan and Orient.

The additional weight of guns so high above her waterline made her sail poorly, leading to her nickname, El Poderoso. Santísima Trinidad remains famous as the only four-decker ship of the line ever built; although the British designed one, Duke of Kent, they never built her.
