The USS Missouri BB-63, known as “Mighty Mo,” was the last battleship commissioned by the U.S. Navy. Construction began in 1941, and it was launched in 1944 during the most critical moments of World War II. The Missouri played a key role in several Pacific battles, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Its most famous moment came on September 2, 1945, when it became the site of Japan’s surrender, marking the end of the war.
The USS Missouri BB-63 was also active during the Korean War, providing support with its powerful 16-inch guns. Although decommissioned in 1955, it was modernized in the 1980s as part of the Navy’s strategy to reactivate its large battleships. During this period, the USS Missouri BB-63 was deployed in the Persian Gulf War, showcasing its combat capabilities decades after its original launch.
Finally, in 1992, it was retired from active service and turned into a floating museum, preserved as a symbol of U.S. naval and military history. The USS Missouri had an impressive career spanning half a century, witnessing the most decisive moments of the 20th century, from World War II to the Cold War and Middle Eastern conflicts.
Currently, the USS Missouri BB-63 is located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a museum ship. It is one of the main tourist attractions and a living reminder of U.S. naval history. Visitors can explore its decks and learn about the battles it participated in, as well as its role in Japan’s surrender.
